Appropriations Ledgers, 1907–1934

This series consists of ledgers which record expenditures charged to the various appropriations or accounts maintained by the Mount Pleasant Indian School. Entry sheets show the appropriation title, dates, credits, and debits, in the proper fund category, and the voucher which covered the transaction. Appropriation categories include such items as Support for Indian Boarding Schools, City Water, Indian Monies-Proceeds of Labor, among others. After 1917, the format of the ledgers changed and entries no longer listed any information about the transaction, such as the names of the participates or a description of the items purchased.

Mount Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, was established by an act of the United States Congress in 1891. This provided funding for creation of an education system of off-reservation boarding schools and vocational training centers to educate Native American children. It was extending a model developed and practiced first at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which opened in 1879 and was directed by Richard Henry Pratt, an Army officer....
